House extension in Therwil, CH

2022 - 2023 unrealized

The new extension occupies the rooftop of a garage belonging to a single-family house built in 1989. The resulting volumes belong to two distinct realms, yet are conceived regarding each other — maintaining a continuous exchange, a quiet back-and-forth conversation.

The tensions and ambiguities expressed on the exterior give way to a sense of calm inside, where clarity, simplicity, and abstraction prevail. A sequence of rooms unfolds along the east-west axis, dispersed to either side, and interrupted by a singular, more expansive space.

This flat spatial hierarchy allows the central space the freedom to act as a stage — equally suited to the rhythms of everyday domestic life and moments of gathering, reflection, or retreat.

The program includes a compact living unit with kitchen, living and dining area, sleeping quarters, and a small study, all designed to allow both openness and privacy within a limited footprint.

The proposed volume is designed using a lightweight, prefabricated timber structure, with an austere material language applied consistently inside and out.
